BILL RIPPON, an early sales manager for Rancho Murieta
On a sale to late businessman Fred Anderson

"One of the first sales was made to Fred Anderson. One of my sales ladies, Eleanor Case, who was good friends with Fred and the Anderson family, she told me Fred wanted to buy a lot, which was the lot right next to the 12th tee on the North Course. ... And I said, 'Well, that's fine. We'll type up all the papers and we'll have them ready for him in a half-hour, 45 minutes.'

"She came back and said that he couldn't wait. And I said, 'Well, I'm not selling any lots or holding any lots off the market without the papers being signed.' She said, 'I want you to meet Fred.' I met Fred and was impressed by him and said, 'Do you really want to buy it?' He said 'Yes, I do, and I'll give you a check for a thousand dollars and I'll sign the papers in blank.'

"And I said, 'No, I don't do business that way, but if you want the lot, give us a thousand dollars ... (and) you can come back tomorrow and the lot is yours. And he did."
