Gums cruises to second title
At Rancho Murieta Country Club, match play determines the Club Champion. In the long history of amateur golf it is rare and very often a curse, for a player to garner medalist honors and then march through match play for the title. This year’s Champion, Danny Gums accomplished both. Gums fired a round of 74 in qualifying and outplayed each and every player standing in his way. His closest match was in the first round against 4 times Club Champion, Bruce Roscorla (2-1).
Gums defeated resourceful Roland Reese in the scheduled 36 hole final in a route. Reese played well throughout the championship, however, and staged a clutch comeback victory over Scott Machen in the semi-finals by virtue of an 18 foot birdie putt on the 17th green. Danny defeated Dave Bunfill in the other semi-final match 5-3.
Jeff Loeb carried away the trophy in the Scratch White Division by defeating Rich Carlson 3-2. Jerry Ortner and rising scratch match player, Joe Marsac were the other semi-final contestants. Barry McCarron led all scorers in the qualifying round by posting a 74. McCarron was ousted in the afternoon by Rich Carlson in the quarter-finals which were played after a morning match against Darrell Lewis.
John Brock won the Handicap Division Championship with a victory over Mike Contini in the finals (1 up). Tom Vandell and Steve Fuhrman were the other semi-finalists.
