RMA Broadband upgrades to DOCSIS 3 technology!

RMA Broadband Lowers Rate & Increases Speeds!

The RMA Board voted to LOWER the rate and increase the speed on the RMA Faster broadband internet package. The cost of this package will be reduced from $69.99 to $49.99 (effective Jan. 2013).The $20 decrease will lower the rate by 28%, while the upload speed will double. The maximum speed will be increased from 10Mbps downloads and 1Mbps uploads to 10Mbps downloads and 2Mbps uploads.

The Board also approved increasing the maximum download and upload speeds for the RMA Fastest package. Increasing the speed from 15Mbps downloads and 1Mbps uploads to 20Mbps down and 3Mbps up. Increasing the download speed by 33% and the upload speed by 200%...at no additional cost!

RMA Broadband was able to recommend these changes to the Board of Directors after completing a major upgrade to the network with the installation and activation of DOCSIS 3* hardware and software, the latest version of cable modem technology. DOCSIS 3 technology will allow RMA to offer faster packages (downloads up to 160Mbps) in the future, as the need arises. The upgrade has again doubled the available bandwidth on the RMA Broadband Network.

DOCSIS 3 allows RMA to increase the number of channels used for data transmission (rather than video) and perhaps more importantly, to "bond" those channels together so a DOCSIS 3 (D3) modem will see them as a single channel. There are benefits to be had by using a D3 capable modem on RMA's upgraded to D3 network, such as increased connection reliability due to the multiple bonded channel redundancy and failover capability. There are also increased capacity/reduced congestion benefits which result in increased reliability of receiving one's provisioned speeds especially during times of peak usage/demand.

While your current modem (which you own) will continue to work fine on the DOCSIS 3network and no modem upgrade is required, RMA has DOCSIS 3 modems available for purchase ($35) for those that desire to upgrade their modem to a DOCSIS 3 modem to take advantage of the new D3 features. As always, RMA Broadband users can purchase their modem anywhere.

*There have been four versions of the set of standards known as DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications). The newest,DOCSIS 3.0, adds a number of enhancements which allow for greater broadband speeds. Through a process called channel bonding - which allows cable operators to combine two, three, four or more channels to increase bandwidth - compliant devices can support up to at least 160 Mbps in the downstream and 120 Mbps in the upstream. DOCSIS 3.0 also includes support for IPv6 and IPTV. http://www.cablelabs.com/cablemodem/primer/ (techie review of DOCSIS features, benefits, & services)
