Stan Weisberger, a longtime Murieta known for his dry sense of humor and love of golf, died Nov. 26 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 80.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park, 43rd Street and Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento.

When Mr. Weisberger moved to the community in 1986, what attracted him were the club’s two golf courses.

“We enjoyed the golf and the country, the animals. It was a nice life. It was lots of fun,” said Ruth Weisberger, his wife of 24 years.

Along with golf came enduring friendships. Jacque and Jim Villa knew the Weisbergers as part of a Murieta golfing group that traveled to resorts in Arizona, Utah and other places on golfing holidays.

“He always had a good sense of humor. They were fun to be around,” recalled Jacque Villa. She noted that Mr. Weisberger was a hard-working volunteer for the Gold Rush, the PGA Senior Golf Tour event held at the Country Club from 1987 to 1995. In those nine tournaments, golfers like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Chi Chi Rodriguez played on the same course that Mr. Weisberger and his golfing friends called home.

He continued to play golf until about two years ago, when back injuries sustained in a car accident the couple was in three years ago ended his playing days. He was diagnosed with lung cancer last year.

Mr. Weisberger enjoyed a successful sales management career in television and radio, and received the Lifetime Media Achievement Award. He was named Man of the Year by Who’s Who in the West in 1970.

After his retirement in 1991, the couple traveled and played golf.

“We have lovely memories,” said Ruth Weisberger of their life together. Her husband died peacefully in her arms.

Mr. Weisberger was born Feb. 5, 1926 in Oakland, and served in the Navy before launching his media career.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Weisberger is survived by his twin sister Beverly Brown of Arnold, sons Mitch and Mark, stepchildren Steve Teague, Cindy Teague, Christie Sampo and their spouses, and seven grandchildren.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sutter Hospice, 2800 L St., Sacramento 95826.
