In golf, many of the skills requisite for peak performance can be learned.  However, length off the tee requires strength, vigor, flexibility and an ability to marry sweetspot and ball with proper timing.  A player either has these skills or he does not.  Three of the  four players who claimed title to the Men’s Club Tough Man certainly possess the distance gene.   

Rob Martin, Todd Bold, Kevin Stillian along with masterful putting by Kenny Chacon outdistanced the field in the Men’s Club Tough Man Event.  Each team shot 6 under par on a day dominated by cold, damp weather and a snails pace of play.  Mercy!  Read more »

Last Saturday morning after breakfast, 60 two-man teams competed in Match Play in the Annual Men’s Club Ham Hunt.  It was a golf player’s version of a Dr. Seuss story.

A Ham or a Spam for every Man,
The Losers got Spam,
The Winners a Ham.
If you are a fan,
Of Spam and not Ham,
Trade you I can,
My Spam for your Ham.

Since there were 60 hams and 60 spams distributed, the results reported here would be tedious and uninspiring.  However there were some curious and noteworthy events.

Ever dream of driving a par 4 or having an iron for your second shot on a par 5?  Well if you were one of the 48 2 man teams that played in the inaugural Tiger Woods Tournament then you probably lived the dream!   Balls were flying high and far as the teams played from the forward tees.  Read more »

Another beautiful day in August greeted the 61 two-man teams for the 2009 Rancho Murieta Men’s Club Scramble. The turnout was the largest single day event we have had this year. The parade of golf carts crossing the Yellow Bridge on the way to the South course was impressive to say the least.

On the course the team of Rick Carrington and Shawn Kassel tied with the team of Greg Glunt and Danny Gums to take the honors in the Low Gross flight with a score of 62. The first flight had a three-way tie for first between the teams of John Compton and Paul Wilson, Dennis Findlay and Eric Luke, and Gary Ozanich and Ron Barrow all shooting 56’s. The second flight had the team of John Marti and Paul Sapunar taking the title with a score of 51.  Read more »

Congratulations to Don Thames, the 2009 Rancho Murieta Men's Club Champion!  Don won 11&10 in the final day 36-hole match over 2008 Club Champion David Valdez.

David played valiantly with a one under par 71 in the opening 18 match play holes on the South course. However Don found the “zone” and shot a little 62 to take an almost insurmountable lead into the afternoon round. The afternoon round proved to play out no differently from the morning round with Don closing David out on Hole #26.

Along the way Don knocked off Terry Wolf 5&4, Randy Reynolds 4&3 and Jeff Couer 3&1 before winning the championship.

In the Combo Scratch Flight, Mark Johnson scored a 1 up victory over runner up Kenny Chacon.   Read more »

The Rancho Murieta Men’s Golf Club Presidents Cup was held April 25th and 26th. The premier event was held on Saturday on the South course and the golf course was in great shape with lighting fast greens. The first day leaders were Ryan Jones and Derrick DeCosta at +15!! Day two the field faced a tough test on the North course – but the weather was picture perfect for a team to go low!! Saturday December 20, the Rancho Murieta Men's Golf Club held it's annual meeting.  The meeting began with a welcome from the Men's Club President Randy Twist. 

Next on the agenda was the naming of the 2008 Player of The Year.

First Place:  Rich Carlson 236 points

Second Place: Dave Ayres 168 points

Third Place: David Valdez 156 points

Fourth Place: Gary Ramsden 135 Points

Fifth Place: Danny Gums  126 points

The Rancho Murieta Men's Golf Club hosted it's premier event of the year, The Prospector.  3 days of golf, food, and lots of fun awaited them.  Thursday's events included the first round of the tournament and the afternoon carnival.  The carnival consisted of a team combined long drive event and a combined one putt closest to the hole.  That was followed by a stag dinner.  Friday was the second round of the tournament and the Apex Pest Control Horse race in the afternoon.  Saturday's last round was either a damage control day or a sprint to the finish.  Saturday's evening festivities brought this wonderful event to it's conclusion.

The 2008 RMMGC 2 man better ball had 44 teams put the peg in the ground on Saturday morning on the South course.  2008 Club champion runner up, Jeff Coeur and  John Weaver edged out the teams of Mike Smith, Jim Morphy and Rich Carlson, Dave Ayres by one stroke to capture the Gross title.  In the Net division, the teams of Floyd Luman, Ernie LeBlanc and Bill Griffith, Shawn Kassel tied for first place.  Congratulations to all the top performers in both flights.

Congratulations to David Valdez the 2008 Rancho Murieta Men's Club Champion!  David won 6 & 5 in a grueling final day 36 hole match over Jeff Coeur.  Along the way David knocked off 2008 Medal Play champion Todd Bold, a former club champion in Denny Elgin, and yet another former club champion in Gary Ramsden to get to the 36 hole final against Jeff Coeur.   Read more »

The 3rd major of the year brought out Rancho Murieta's "Best of the Best".  After two days of grinding, the team of Mike Martel and Todd Bold captured the title in the Gross flight.  In the Net flight, the team of Mike Contini and Greg Coauette brought home the title.  One other tidbit of news....with T. Bold being part of the winning team, Todd has captured his second major in a row.  Will the Club Championship be the 3rd leg of the "Todd Slam"?  Stay tuned.  Congratulations to all the top performers and players in the field.

A total of 55 teams headed out to the course with one thing on their mind, stay friends. The team of Rich Carlson and Keith Fudge took the Gross title with a score of 67. The first word that comes to mind is “WOW”.  Just when you think you have seen the North at its toughest, it showed a new side.  The tough North course showed teeth that the 56 two man teams had never seen before.  New tee locations, tough pin placements, and thank goodness, a beautiful day.  Kenny Chacon and Club Champion Danny Gums tamed the monster with a score of 78 to win the Gross flight.  Not to be out done, Briggs Matsko and Rob Martin also shot a gross 78, however lost in a score card playoff.  They took home the Net flight title.  Read more »

 The first event of the year, Red, White and Blue Scramble was played on a blustery, yet mostly sunny day.  24 teams came out and put their best efforts on the line.

  Leading the way in the gross flight was the "Mr. 59's".  The team of Matt Davis, Kevin Sexton, John Nichols and Steve Jones who made their way around the South course with a winning gross score of 59.  The solid team of Chuck Dorr, Eric Sullwold, Floyd Moore and Sam Somers held off the field on the net side with a net 51.
