Country Club performer featured in the Bee
Spencer Day, the singer who performs tonight at the Country Club, is the subject of a full-page feature in today's Bee. The story is tied to a benefit concert Sunday in Sacramento and the release of Day's third album.
From the story:
After being snapped up by Universal about three years ago, Day quickly learned how difficult the big leagues can be. The international entertainment conglomerate tried to fit him into a marketing box. But when a performer is riddled with stage fright and insecurity and doesn't have a strong sense of self, the corporate machine can do major damage.
"I got torn in so many directions," Day says. "They said, 'Look like this!' 'Sing like this!' I didn't know who I was or what I was supposed to sing or even what I should do with my life. But I kind of had to completely break down to rebuild myself from scratch. The whole Universal thing really helped me figure out what I don't want to do."
What he does want to do, and what he's good at, is writing and singing songs. The new album, which has a warm late '50s, early '60s vibe – think Roy Orbison meets Dusty Springfield by way of Burt Bacharach – is a dynamic showcase for Day's honeyed baritone and displays a sharpened, more emotionally pitched level of songwriting than on his previous efforts.
