A two-hour power outage overnight affected 11,300 Sacramento Municipal Utility District customers, including all of Rancho Murieta.

The outage occurred at 11:34 p.m. Thursday and lasted until 1:38 a.m. Friday, according to SMUD spokesman Chris Capra. The outage was caused by a downed power pole on Jackson Road near Cosumnes River Elementary School, he said.

SMUD dispatch crews attributed the pole failure to a rusted support for the power lines located miles away at Watt Avenue and Jackson Road, according to Capra.

The metal support was covered with dirt during a road-widening project several months ago. It rusted, weakening support for the lines and increasing pressure on the poles carrying the lines, Capra said.

The outage affected SMUD customers along Sunrise Boulevard, Zinfandel Drive, Bradshaw Road and Folsom Boulevard in addition to Rancho Murieta. The pole and the support were replaced by SMUD crews.
