A strong winter storm rolled through the area Friday, felling trees and knocking out Murieta's power for six hours.

The outage, which began at 9 a.m., affected the entire community, including the traffic lights at the North and South gates.

At 2 p.m., SMUD reported 150,000 customers in the Sacramento area were without power. An hour later, that number had dropped to 100,000. By 9:30 p.m., it was down to 50,000, with SMUD saying half those would regain power during the night.

Power went out again in Murieta from 9:30 to 9:45 p.m.

An RMA crew was out early Friday, cleaning up a large limb that fell on Reynosa Drive.

Earlier in the day, Murieta Village, a seniors-only manufactured-home community, was especially hard-hit by the storm.

Virginia Haines returned from attending a church service to find the wind had stripped away half her carport. She also lost shingles from her roof.

"I'm sure other people had it worse," she said, and mentioned her neighbor Carla Whited's experience as proof of that.

Whited was at home when the wind tore a limb from a redwood tree and drove it through her roof. "It came through the living room," she said. "It scared me to death."

Rancho Murieta Fire Station 59 came to her aid, removing the limb and installing a temporary cover over the large hole.

"The firemen were fantastic. I don't know what I'd have done without them," Whited said.

The Village doesn't have maintenance personnel, and residents worked together to remove debris from the streets and keep the drains clear to prevent flooding. "We take care of everything ourselves in here," Haines said.

Workers from the Rancho Murieta Association's Maintenance Department were out early Friday, dealing with numerous reports of tree problems on the North and South.

The Community Services District said emergency generators were powering its services -- the water treatment plant, sewer treatment plant, the North and South gates and CSD Building.

Ed Crouse, CSD general manager, said district crews were working with the RMA to make sure storm drains were functioning. "It's more the wind than anything," Crouse said of problems.

Burger King in the Country Store was closed in the early afternoon. The Country Store was open -- the gas pumps weren't working -- and staffers there said the store would close in mid-afternoon if the power didn't return.

Businesses in Murieta Plaza were closed, as was the Post Office.

Plaza Foods and the Country Store reopened once power returned.

At Tina Ramos' home on Medella Circle, a tree landed on a car in her driveway. Ramos said the car belongs to her mother, who lives on Celebrar, and the damage might be limited to the windshield.

The owner hoped the damage at this Medella Circle home wasn't as bad as it looked.

Ramos was notified by Security after a neighbor saw the tree fall and reported it.

The Country Club reported early Friday that no trees had fallen on the courses, but that changed as the day went on. (See photos here [0].)
