If the fish didn't mind getting wet Saturday, neither did the kids who were catching them. That's Collin Vanneman, 5, under the umbrella. About 100 children came out for the annual Kiwanis Kids' Fishing Day at Lake Clementia despite cloudy skies and occasional light rain. After some instruction from Fish and Game representatives, and with the help of Fishing Club members, parents and grandparents, the kids set about catching 800 trout brought in for the occasion. They also learned some of the philosophy of the sport. "It's too bad the weather isn't better, but that's fishing," said Fishing Club volunteer Bud Dodge. When it was time for lunch, the kids set aside their fish and headed for the hot dogs and hamburgers.
Raelyn Reese, 9, displays the second fish she's caught since taking up the sport. She caught her first trout at last year's event.
Kiwanis member Frank Hashorva sold tickets for the raffle, which featured rods and reels. The annual event is a family favorite. Jack Cooper attended with his daughter, Marty Pennington, and grandchildren Zach, almost 2, and Emily, 5.
Plaza Foods supplied lunch, which was prepared and served by students from Sheldon and Pleasant Grove high schools who belong to the Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club.
