Billye Ericksen, 2008 Handicap Champion

Billye Ericksen Handicap Champion

Hm-m-m, Match Play, sounds like fun.  Get to pick up and still score the hole.  Plus and minus denote the scoring and the round doesn’t even have to be finished to declare a winner. The low handicapper gives strokes to the high handicapper.  Winners move to the next day’s play.  Sounds doable and so the annual RMWGC Match Play Handicap Tournament got underway on Thursday, April 17th.

Thirty-two players, committed to the 5-day elimination tournament.  Winners from the 1st days play moved into the Championship or Consolation round.  The winners of each group then moved onto the quarterfinals, semifinals and into the final round.

The Championship matches were dominated by Sunny Robinson and Billye Ericksen.  On Thursday, April 24th, Billye Ericksen brought her “A” game and is now the RMWGC 2008 Handicap Champion.  She was awarded flowers and her name will be engraved on the perpetual trophy.  CONGRATULATIONS! Billye.

The final Consolation round matched Joyce Koe and Nan Parquette.  Joyce is always a winner, but this time she was winner #2 and Nan was winner #1.   It was, FUN!

The Handicap Tournament was chaired expertly by Fran Mezzio.  Mike,Greg, Mark and all of the guys in the pro-shop accommodated the players and helped the tournament go smoothly.  Thanks from all of the RMWGC membership for your continual professionalism.

Welcome new members Beverly Luman and Allison Turner.

Team Play gets underway for the River Valley League on May 8th.  Foothill League play commences on June 24th.  Teams are captained by  Joan Lake (A) and Karen Kehoe (B).  It promises to be a competitive season in both leagues.

There were a few changes in the calendar for April, but all were weathered and this will serve as a reminder to sign up in the locker room for the May 6th play day.  The following week is the long awaited Murieta Classic Invitational.  This year’s theme, Swinging in the Rain, promises to be a fun filled tournament headed by Gwen vonSeeger.

Pat Greenhaw,  handed out USGA 2008 Rules Revisions for Stroke Play and information regarding clubs in your bag.  Here is the Pop Quiz: You’re about to hit a shot in the fairway, but as you look down and address your ball, you can see another player’s ball in your peripheral vision.  It is not your line of play and doesn’t interfere with your swing. Can you make the player move the ball before playing your shot?  Rules are important to the game of golf and the new USGA Rule Books are available in the pro shop for purchase.  You will find the answer under rule 22-2.
