Summerfest Day 2: Airborne daredevils and cool rides

Bike jump

[Updated with car contest winners] Day Two of Summerfest added high-flying skateboard and BMX exhibitions and the classic car show. All three were free. Two performances of the BMX show were offered Saturday afternoon on the Stonehouse Park basketball courts. Stunt riders delighted the crowd with feats of cycling skill on the ground and in the air.

Skateboard jump

The skateboard show, sponsored by Rancho Murieta Youth Enrichment Advocacy, began the Saturday afternoon entertainment. YEA is a volunteer group that's raising funds to build a skateboard park at Stonehouse Park.

Summerfest cars

Who could worry about high gas prices when looking at 30 dreamboats gleaming in the sunshine?

57 Chevy

The classic car show proved that the all-American love affair with the automobile is alive and well. A white Thunderbird, a '57 Chevy, a red Corvette, a '58 race car, an icy-blue Mustang, a '36 sedan -- all icons celebrated in popular culture.

VW Bug

Even small children spoke the language Saturday, greeting the vintage Volkswagen bug as the "Herbie car" and the Model T Ford as the "Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang" car.

Skate Board Demo

My 5 year old & I didn't make the skateboard demo.  After hearing from some parents at the bicycle show and seeing the photo of a helmet less kid, I'm glad we missed it.  I would have been explaining why there were no helmets or pads on the skate boarders.  How come they don't wear helmets dad? Will helmets  be required at the RM Skate Park?  Who & How will this be enforced? Karl Gebhardt

Skateboarding and Helmets

I agree with Karl and unfortunately there will most likely not be a helmet to be found at the new skatepark. Yes, helmets should be required. But what group of parents will see it is enforced? Who arranged the skateboard demo? Do they not know that helmets should have been required for the participants? Poor adult judgment and poor example to our youth.
