Crash on Jackson Road leaves one dead, two seriously injured

[Updated Sept. 8] A three-car accident on Jackson Road between Rancho Murieta's North and South gates left one person dead and two seriously injured and tied up traffic in both directions for 3 1/2 hours Saturday. On Monday, the California Highway Patrol provided more information about the people involved in the accident, including one from Rancho Murieta.

According to CHP Officer Matt Ramirez at the scene, about 5 p.m. a Toyota Previa van heading west at high speeds crossed the double-yellow line and hit an eastbound Lexus RX300 in a partial head-on and caused the Lexus to roll over. A Pontiac Vibe behind the Lexus got entangled in the crash.

Ramirez gave this account of injuries: A passenger in the van was ejected in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. The woman driver of the Lexus, its only occupant, was helicoptered to UC Davis Medical Center with severe injuries. The driver of the van had severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center. The driver of the Vibe suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center.

Later information from the CHP said the Lexus driver was a 54-year-old Rancho Murieta woman who suffered a possible broken femur.

The CHP on Monday identified the van's occupants as two men from Williams, 51 and 41 years old. The driver was arrested at the hospital on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.  The Vibe was driven by a 48-year-old woman from Valley Springs who had an 11-year-old passenger.

Additional information on the accident victims was not available.

The accident area was treated as a crime scene because of suspicions that the van operator was driving under the influence, Ramirez said. He said there was a strong smell of beer inside the vehicle. A case of beer was thrown from the van in the accident and another case was still inside, along with open beer cans and empty beer cans, Ramirez said.

Crash

The crash that killed one person was investigated by the CHP for possible driving under the influence by one of the drivers.

Ramirez said the CHP had received a report just before the accident that the van was passing on the double-yellow along Jackson Road at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The accident was at about the same location where a Murieta woman was seriously injured in a head-on crash in June.

After giving an initial account of the accident, investigators gathered more information and changed some details of their account, including the directions the vehicles were traveling.

Jackson Road reopened about 8:30 p.m.
