A show so hot, the lights went out

Backup singer

“Celebrate with Peter Rivera” lived up to its name Saturday night as Entertainment, Theatre and Culture for Rancho Murieta concluded another concert season at Lake Clementia Amphitheater. Rivera is the former lead singer and drummer for Rare Earth, a group whose heyday was in the late 1960s and early '70s. Despite a power failure that interrupted the show for nearly an hour, Rivera and his band gave new life to rock, Motown and funk classics, from “It’s Your Thing” to a bluesy version of “Tobacco Road.”

Band

Couples slow-danced to “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” and children bobbed in front of the stage for feather boas flung by the all-girl trio during a spirited performance of “I’m a Woman.”

Kids

When problems with a generator interrupted the show in the middle of Motown tour de force “Losing You,” a member of the group joined children on the dance floor to lead a sing-along.

“Let’s see, where were we?” Rivera said when the power was restored about 45 minutes later and the band returned to the stage. “That’s the longest version of ‘Losing You’ I’ve ever played,” he joked at the end of the song.

Rivera came out from behind his drum kit for an encore that began about 11 p.m. “We came a long way to be here and we’re not going to go home yet,” he announced to the cheering crowd. After a soulful “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” the audience was invited join in on “Celebrate” the joyous conclusion to the evening.

Celebrate!

A great season ETC!  What a great show.  And the mark of a really good performer to come out and sing with the kids.  We are so fortunate to have you.  Thank you ETC volunteers.

Peter Rivera thanks the community

Peter Rivera sends this e-mail to RM.com and asks that it be shared with the community:

I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who helped put the show on and all the fun folks who attended.

You know, when you've been on the road doing shows for 40+ years, you come across many different situations. Playing for your community was really a treat. I know the kids in the band were so happy, and watching my girls playing with the kids during the power problem was such a good feeling for me. I am so proud of all the players in the band.

We had a really great time, and it will stay in our hearts and minds for a long time to come. And thanks to Debbie ... she was awesome!

Blessings to all,

Peter Rivera
