It can be difficult to stand up for what you believe

Matt McGuire, one of the hardest things to do is stand up for what is right, especially when it seems you are alone. What's worse is when people threaten you and your family to shake your principles. Albeit a difficult row to tow. Keep your chin up. I believe in what you are doing, as do many others. Your allies are closer than you know. Your efforts will reward you in plenty if not today, tomorrow. Time does heal. People will be humbled to your plight when they realize what you've managed to accomplish.

Going public about foundation problems was an act of bravery

While I certainly respect residents' desire to protect their property values, I'm deeply concerned by those who'd rather shoot the messenger than allow developer Reynen & Bardis to face public scrutiny.

Before approaching the media, Matt McGuire attempted to come to a satisfactory resolution with his builder for well over a year. Since his home is constructed on a post tension foundation, his situation, unlike other foundation problems, was not being addressed. (Please remember, cosmetic fixes -- such as paint and new sheet rock -- merely cover up serious structural defects. And, to make matters worse, results are only temporary.) How long do Matt's critics believe he should have waited for genuine structural repairs? Another year? Another two years? Until his warranty ran out?

If not for Mr. McGuire's conscientious decision to expose R&B's immense construction problems, more innocent home buyers might have tragically joined his nightmare. And, if not for his efforts to force the developers into action, it's possible many Murietans would not be receiving the help they are now.

Although Matt's family has been offered gracious support from compassionate neighbors, both North and South, I'm also sorry to say, since he went public, his family's been forced to endure some grievous verbal attacks, as well as physical threats, by a handful of angry residents. I want to assure you, Matt, that's not what Murieta's all about.

I believe Mr. McGuire's efforts to right a horrible wrong upon his family, and his community, is nothing less than an act of bravery. So, thank you, Matt, for all you've endured to preserve Murieta. I'm proud to call you my neighbor.
