Hondas and Hummers - enough already!!

I've had enough of the Honda and Hummer commercials to last me a lifetime.  For goodness sakes, take them off of the cable rotation!  You'll never convince me that these two companies have paid for the thousands of times these commercials have run over the last several months!  Are we asleep at the console at the cable office?  Are we so desperate to fill the time, that we GIVE IT AWAY?  These commercials ran four times in about thirty minutes on ESPN Tuesday.  Enough already!

I keep the remote close by any time I'm not watching network TV on our cable system, just so I can turn off the TV, or change the channel until these annoying, and LOUD, I repeat, LOUD, commercials are over.

By the way, In the ten minutes it has taken me to write this email, the commercials have been on twice on TNT.

Okay, now I'm going to take a deep breath...with my remote close by!

Dead air too

Nina, you forgot to mention the half minute of dead air that often follows one or the other.

We tried to have somebody do something about equalizing the volume on RMA's ad insertions when I was on the Communications Committee 4-5 years ago. Got shrugs from staff and no results. It appears nobody around here knows how to correct the problem.

Some things never change here. One is that we are not equipped, staffed, and/or adequately quality-oriented to competently run a cable TV company to the standards a community such as ours should expect. No amount of expensive new doodads will change the fact that we try to run things on a shoestring budget and then wonder why we don't get quality outcomes.

Quality

Quality is a word I would never associate with our cable system.  Do you remember how long they ran the PG junior football and cheerleader commercials after the deadline for signing up for these two activities?  A full month, at least.  Same thing for the ETC concerts.  "Get your tickets today" for a concert that took place three weeks ago!

Shrugs from the staff and no results?  Sounds like incompetence or, at best, complete apathy to me.  Do we actually PAY people to run this system?

No problems for us

We don't have any of the problems noted!

But, let me mention that after 7 years of RM cable we went to DirecTV.  We will not be switching back.

I spoke to Stifler, several months ago, about the LOUD volume and commercials on several stations and he LAUGHED AND SAID HIS WIFE TELLS HIM THE SAME THING! Guess what? NO CHANGE! We don't have the problem with Direct TV.......We have an incompetence problem with RMA.....

Hondas and Hummers

I agree! Enough is enough.  The ads are irritating.  But most of all, the fact that our cable technician cannot adjust the loudness of the ads on our system is simply incompetent.  If they cannot fix something as simple as the volume, why would we ever think they could run the entire cable system here in RM?????   We have no business being in the "cable business"  why, oh, why do we continue this waste of money?  Okay so I have done my annual complaining here at RM.com, and it is not coincidental that it is on the same subject, our cable TV system!   Happy New Year!

RMA says it's looking into this

This came up at last night's RMA meeting.  GM Dave Stiffler said he knew nothing about the problem and that the RMA wasn't responsible for the commercials.

Others suggested that the vendor who handles ad placement on the cable system -- under a contract with RMA -- is responsible for the ads, which, in addition to repeating endlessly, have a technical glitch that makes them unwatchable.

The directors talked about the contract for ad placement as being unusual but weren't specific.

Stiffler said he would look into the problem with the commercial and report back.

A symptom of the disease

This has gone on for years. The Cable Committee dealt with "loud ad" complaints around 2003-2004 and the answer we got then, too, was "it's a mystery, we just job this out to a vendor for a share of the miniscule ad revenue, and we can't seem to do anything about it."

Cycle forward four years and it's the same deal. Except this time the GM didn't know about the problem, which has gone on for months with these particular ads The Board is again told that the problem is with the vendor, but we're not sure just what the problem is. There's something "unusual" about the vendor's contract but we can't talk about it.

There, I submit, is a profile of our cable "business plan" in a nutshell. We're in over our heads, don't have the time or the means as it is to spot and correct such obvious and simple technical problems, and yet rather than be satisfied with trying to just provide the basic essentials with all the quality we can muster, we're attempting to take on much vaster technical and business complexities and attempting to compete with Fortune 500 companies, using our members' involuntary dues as our bottomless line of credit and their houses as our collateral.

If you haven't turned in your cable survey ballot yet, please mark it "yes" for Freedom of Choice and return it to RMA right away, either by mail or by just dropping it off in the bill-paying mailbox in the driveway.

Looking into it

Thanks, Karen.  I'm sure it will be looked into right away.

Anybody want to go halves with me on buying the Brooklyn Bridge?  I hear it's for sale.

The Sound of Silence

I haven't heard, with emphasis on heard, the Hummer/Honda commercials on the cable stations lately.  My heartfelt thanks to whomever took the initiative to remove the commercials!
