[Updated March 25] Despite plans for Sunday's Kids' Fishing Day to go on rain or shine, the Fishing Club announced early Sunday that the event was being canceled due to rain and will be held Sunday, April 1.
The club asked that people not fish in the area that has been stocked, to preserve the fish for the event.
The earlier story:
With rain predicted for the weekend, Cosumnes River Little League has canceled Saturday's Opening Day ceremonies -- the second cancellation. The trout went into Lake Clementia Thursday, so the Kiwanis Kids' Fishing Day will go on as scheduled Sunday, rain or shine, event chair Joe Mazzoni Sr. said Friday.
Fishing Day starts at 9 a.m. and all participants must check in at Lake Clementia.
The Little League parade and ceremonies will happen sometime after spring break, with the exact date to be announced. As of Friday, all games were scheduled to be played on Saturday, but CRLL President Josh Goard advised players and parents to check the CRLL web site and their email for updates.
Kiwanis Kids' Fishing Day is an annual event co-sponsored by the Rancho Murieta Fishing Club and the California Department of Fish and Game. It provides lessons on the importance of good water quality, maintaining habitat for fish, fishing ethics, the care of fish caught, and instruction on casting and fishing under the leadership of Fish and Game personnel and assistance of members of the Fishing Club. Trout are planted in the lake to give the fledgling anglers the chance to catch their limit.
Attendance is limited to the first 120 children from the Rancho Murieta, Sloughhouse and Wilton community to sign up for the event at Rancho Murieta Business Center in the Plaza, where registration began earlier this month.
A free barbeque lunch will be provided to the kids and their parents at 11 a.m. by the Sexton family, owners of Plaza Foods.
