Music Mike charmed children, parents and grandparents with a music- and and dance-filled performance at Lake Clementia Amphitheater Sunday afternoon. The merry adventure began with dozens of children singing along to time-honored favorites like “Bingo” and “Ring Around the Rosie,” then took a madcap turn with a version of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” that featured crawling like snakes, hopping like rabbits and flying like birds.  After “hotdog rolls” down the slopes of the amphitheater, marching with maracas, lots of singing, a geometry lesson with colorful scarves, and some spirited dancing with the folks, it was time to go home, and every child received a lollipop compliments of Music Mike. The Kiwanis Club, which has made the free annual event part of growing up in Rancho Murieta, said about 170 attended the show. Click for larger image. Dog chipping

From left, Girl Scouts Abby Donnalley, Kaydence Farnsworth and Faith Hawkins, all 10, visit with the dogs waiting to get identity microchips Sunday afternoon at the Gazebo. Unfortunately, there was a communications breakdown with the SPCA ... and its chipping van didn't show up. After 45 minutes, with a waiting list 18 names long, and lots of dogs and one cat on hand, the Rancho Murieta Association explained the situation and said the event would be rescheduled soon. But the Girl Scouts, from Troop 1568, did well with their wishlist collection for animals: Among the items collected were dog and cat food, animal toys, a fur trimmer and a large dog crate. Garrett Fong earns rank of Eagle Scout

Eagle ceremony

Fong familyRancho Murieta’s bumper crop of Eagle Scouts continued Monday night as Garrett Fong was awarded the rank of Eagle in a ceremony at Rancho Murieta Community Church. That's Troop 633 Scoutmaster Brian Correia, left, speaking of the qualities of Garrett, who's flanked by his mother, Karen, and father, Kenton, the assistant scoutmaster. Almost 100 people were on hand for the ceremony and refreshments afterwards. There was a slide show of Garrett’s years in scouting, in which, as Correia pointed out to laughter, you could see Garrett getting taller and his father getting grayer. In addition to hugs and thanks for his parents, Garrett thanked scout mentors all the way back to his Cub Scouts days, his Future Farmers of America advisor and the men who helped him with welding work for his Eagle project. For that project, Garrett, who’s 17, designed and built four permanent recycling bins to be placed in community parks. He’s an incoming senior at Pleasant Grove High this fall and he hopes to pursue higher education in animal sciences. (Click photos for larger images.) Movie Night

Photo gallery: Faces in the crowd (32 photos)

Many kids were bundled up for Saturday night's Movie Night, staged by the Rancho Murieta Association. It was a family-friendly gathering that drew between 150 and 200 people to a pleasantly brisk Lake Clementia Amphitheater. Pre-movie, the adults socialized as the kids danced and ran around, and many picnicked. The movie was "Ferdinand," an animated story of a young bull who'd rather sniff flowers than fight. Read more » Read more » about A movie night for the whole family
