Saturday morning for cookies and caregivers

Cookie sales

The Girl Scouts did a booming cookie business Saturday morning at Murieta Plaza, with sales stands spread all over the lot. Outside Ace Hardware, from left, Daisy Scouts Sarah Myers, Emily Buckman and Molly Eathorne were guided by Junior Girl Scout Allison Myers. The Daisy Scouts are from Troop 2677; Allison is from Troop 2691. The girls did well helping customers, keeping the counter full and making change.

Caregiver

Facilitator Julie Interrante led three dozen participants through a workshop for caregivers Saturday morning at the Rancho Murieta Association Building. The session, "Life in the Midst of Caregiving," addressed the emotional, spiritual and physical costs of caring for others and offered caregivers ways to deal with these pressures. The free session was sponsored by Rotary and a number of businesses. Read more » about Saturday morning for cookies and caregivers

Sharing with children who aren't as fortunate

Pack 633

MessageFriday night, the boys of Cub Scout Pack 633 renewed an annual tradition, boxing up holiday presents for poor children in other countries. First they constructed the shoebox-sized gift boxes, puzzling over the process as much as any parent on Christmas Eve, then they went down a line and selected toiletries, school supplies, candy and toys and put together boxes for boys and girls. (One mother, looking at the box her son put together, was heard telling him, "That's not a box for a girl!") Then the boys wrote notes to the recipients, sometimes with the help of dad or mom. Free youth flights Sunday at RM Airport

Weather permitting, boys and girls 8 to 17 years old are eligible for a free Young Eagles flight Sunday at Rancho Murieta Airport, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association. To fly, you must pre-register by sending an email, with your name and age, to YoungEagles@eaa1476.org.

Flights begin at 9, if it’s clear enough.

From Kimberly Sanders Smith, EAA 1476 president: “It's supposed to rain in the morning. There should be a break mid-morning that will allow dry flying. More important is the visibility, which needs to be at least three miles with more than 1,000-foot ceiling. Forecast looks pretty good, but all flights are subject to weather, FAA minimums, and each pilot's personal minimums for safety.” Read more » about Free youth flights Sunday at RM Airport

On Zancada Court, it's Halloween showtime!

Zancada Halloween

Some Murietans trick out their yards for Halloween, and some have mechanical decorations, but D.J. and Nancy Martin of Zancada Court have the decorated yard, the mechanicals and, when they hoist the garage door, a full-blown, automated Halloween show for the kids. D.J. Martin said he built and fine-tuned the show over 15 years in the other places where they’ve lived, in Northern California and North Carolina. He constructed it out of salvaged electronics and mechanical pieces ("with some dumpster diving,” he adds). The Martins moved to Murieta South 11 months ago, so this is their first Halloween here. If you attend their show, which will run every 20 minutes Saturday night, you’ll have a chance to contribute to the Bastian family medical fund. A neighbor posted about this in the Forums and included a video link, so check that out. Read more » about On Zancada Court, it's Halloween showtime!

Music Mike

At a Music Mike show, some things are certain: The kids in the audience will play their tummy drums. They’ll sing about a dog named B-I-N-G-O. They’ll be part of a conga line. And they’ll have a great time. Music Mike, sponsored by the Kiwanis, has been an annual visitor to Rancho Murieta for more than a decade. About 250 people – kids, parents and grandparents – attended Sunday afternoon’s show at Lake Clementia. The kids sang, danced (very slow and very fast), played maracas, marched, skipped and jumped. Music Mike got big crowd reactions when he offered to play a love song (“Ewwwwwwwwwwww!”), when he asked two boys if they talk about girlfriends (guilty laughter and “Ewwwwwwwwwwww!”), and when he asked if boys buy underwear at Target (shocked denial and “Noooooooooooooo!”). An entertainer needs to know his audience, especially when they’re 3 to 9 years old, and Music Mike certainly knows his. Read more » about Music Mike entertains the kids
