Sunday was a big day at Rancho Murieta Airport, with a display of vintage airplanes and an Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles event. While waiting for their ride in an airplane, Kylee, 7, and Jared Bettger, 10, along with their father, Bob Bettger, examined a 1944 Taylorcraft L-2M aircraft restored by Murieta pilot Dick Valladao. Sacramento County will mitigate the loss of 13 acres of woodlands and grasslands due to a court-ordered tree-cutting project at Rancho Murieta Airport last year by purchasing 26 acres of similar property in the area, according to county Deputy Parks Director Jill Ritzman.

The Sacramento Valley Conservancy will take the lead in locating the land, she said. The conservancy owns Deer Creek Hills, a 4,000-plus-acre oak woodlands and grasslands area adjacent to Rancho Murieta.

"It's some good news out of this whole project," Ritzman said recently of the mitigation effort, which is paid for by the county. Read more » about Tree cutting at RM Airport means purchase of 26 acres of open space

Plane ride

Kylee Howard, 8, took to the skies over Rancho Murieta with pilot Frank Storm at Sunday's Young Eagles event at RM Airport. Blue skies and perfect flying weather brought out a record-breaking 42 children for the free airplane and helicopter rides offered by the Rancho Murieta Aviators and other volunteer Experimental Aircraft Association aviators. The aircraft association established the Young Eagles program in 1992 to provide young people from 8 to 17 years of age with an introduction to flying, and the aviators' club hosts the events several times a year. In addition to their Young Eagle membership certificate, children received a pen in the shape of an airplane as a memento of their adventure. "It's good for the kids and the community," said pilot Wally Boeck, who coordinates the events for the club. Read more » about Up, up and away
