[Updated 4:25 p.m.] Firefighters responded quickly to a small grass fire along Jackson Road Saturday afternoon. The fire, reported just before 3 p.m., was being mopped up 40 minutes later. The blaze burned along Jackson Road and scorched a stretch on the South Course's 15th Hole. The smoky smell we've been experiencing since midnight is due to a fast-moving fire on the county line between Amador and El Dorado counties. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says firefighters will be conducting “live fire” training exercises this month in areas near Rancho Murieta. The exercises are part of the Cal Fire Vegetation Management Plan, an agreement Cal Fire has entered into with the neighboring Van Vleck ranch, the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, and the Prairie City OHV State Park, located on White Rock Road in Rancho Cordova.

According to Cal Fire, the vegetation management plan provides locations for training firefighting personnel while helping to control Medusahead, an invasive weed species that can be controlled through properly timed burning before its seeds mature. Firefighters responded to a small grass fire at Stonehouse and Jackson roads around 3 p.m. Friday and quickly put out the blaze, which erupted at the foot of a power pole.  Bryan Thomson, Sac Metro Fire public information officer, said they were looking to SMUD for an answer as to how the fire started.  Parts of Rancho Murieta experienced a brief power outage at about the same time. Decals that alert emergency personnel to the presence of pets in a house are now available by contacting sheriff’s volunteers at the James L. Noller Safety Center. The decals are three-inch, self-stick squares with the seal of the sheriff’s department. They contain spaces for residents to fill in the number of dogs, cats or other animals in a household and an emergency phone number.

The decals were developed by the Central Division of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department after Jacque Villa of Rancho Murieta saw similar ones at her veterinarian’s office and brought the idea to the sheriff’s department. A fire at a home on Abierto Drive was contained to the garage Sunday afternoon, thanks to quick action by neighbors who fought the flames until firefighters arrived. “The neighbors saved the day,” Sac Metro Station 59 Firefighter Tom Niklewski said at the scene. It was next-door neighbor Justin Welter who saw flames coming from the open garage about 1:30 p.m. and sounded the alarm. He was  joined by neighbors and his brother Richard in fighting the flames with garden hoses and pulling items from the garage. The homeowners were not at home when the fire started. The cause of the fire is undetermined, according to firefighters. A new garage door opener with battery backup that was sitting on the garage floor is being looked at as a possible cause. A community workshop, "Assessing Residential Wildfire Hazards," will be held at Rancho Murieta Fire Station 59 Oct. 7, Oct. 21 and Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program is one of the public education courses the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is providing as part of preparing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan funded by a FEMA grant the district recently received.

According to the fire district, the protection plan will allow it to conduct several programs internally and provide opportunities to stakeholders, property owners and residents to reduce their exposure to losses that could be sustained in a wildfire incident. Crews from Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District  and Cal Fire responded to a fire on dry grassland by the Country Club shortly before noon Thursday. The burn was limited to less than an acre, and firefighters remarked on the large number of golf balls in the charred field as they performed their work. Fire officials on the scene were trying to determine the cause of the fire, which occurred in an area next to a path between the club maintenance yard and the North Course. Fire crews responded to a blaze shortly before noon Tuesday at Schneider ranch, across the Cosumnes River from Rancho Murieta Airport. The fire burned about two acres of grassland, according to Capt. Bryan Thomson of Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. The fire was extinguished quickly, he said. Its cause is unknown, and no structures were reported involved, Thomson said. Fire crews, including a helicopter, responded at lunchtime Friday to a fast-moving vegetation fire near Poncho Conde Circle in Murieta Village.  Soon after, crews were fighting a fire near the Yellow Bridge on the north side of the Cosumnes.
